Service-Learning Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer Students will provide college mentoring for first year students enrolled in the Student Success Program at UW-Eau Claire. Mentors will assist with the transition from high school, connect students with campus and community resources, and offer peer support to new students beginning this amazing journey through college.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer The Student Success Program is a one-year academic support program that provides small classes and a structured introduction to the university to first year students. 

3.

What skills are required for this project? 

Answer Mentors have successfully completed at least one year of college and - share stories with students about your own educational career and the ways you overcame obstacles similar to theirs. -help students overcome their fear of a professor and help them to ask questions in a class or visit the professor during office hours. - show a student how you learned time management to do well in your classes. - listen to a student describe a personal problem and explore resources at the university to deal with the problem. -help a new student understand a particularly tough rule or procedure and explain it in a way that the student is willing to come back to you to learn about other difficult rules and procedures. -help a new student understand how to use resources at the university, such as the Academic Skills Center, Center for Writing Excellence, or Counseling Services.

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer 1. Establish a positive, personal relationship with your mentee; 2. Help your mentee develop academic and life skills; and 3. Assist your mentee in accessing academic and university resources.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer Attend an initial training session and social event where mentors and mentees are introduced. Meet periodically with a small group of first year students. Communicate with Student Success Program Staff about challenges the student is facing. Attend a mentor meeting midway through the semester and a wrap-up meeting at the end of the semester. Complete contact records and a final evaluation of your experience.
