Service-Learning Proposal Description


Briefly describe the project and the community to be addressed.
Answer Learn about the history of the Chippewa Valley through exhibits within the Chippewa Valley Museum. Greet and interact with visitors as they enter the museum. Ring up sales at admittance desk and at museum gift shop. Become familiar with merchandise and keep the gift shop clean/straightened. Answer phones and help staff with projects as needed. Learn about and share history of the area with visitors while scooping ice cream, making malts, shakes, sodas, coffee, and specialty items in the old-fashioned ice cream parlor. The museum is located in Carson Park, Eau Claire.


What is the mission of the agency or organization?
Answer The purpose of the Chippewa Valley Museum shall be to discover, collect, preserve, and interpret the history and culture of the Chippewa Valley and its people. CVM is an award winning museum that involves the community in history of the Chippewa Valley through exhibits, tours, classes, and special events for all age groups.


What skills are required for this project?
Answer The ability to work well with people and make change is required. During shifts volunteers will converse with visitors, handle change, credit card machine, answer phones. Field questions about history relating to the Chippewa Valley area. Volunteers will also work with visitors of varying backgrounds, a variety of staff and community members. Volunteers with also learn about the local and area history through knowledge of exhibits, artifacts, and information within the museum.


What are the objectives for the student learning and service?
Answer The objectives for the Front Desk/Museum Store/Ice Cream Parlor volunteer at Chippewa Valley Museum is to make a favorable impression on the general public, visitors, and callers. Become familiar with the museum's exhibits, learn about the history of the area, and convey information to visitors. The volunteer will also hopefully learn the importance of the museum and service within the community.


What are the availability requirements for the student?
Answer Weekend volunteer hours: Saturday 10 AM - 1PM or Saturday 1-5 PM. This position is needed 1-3 times per month. Add your name to the sub list to volunteer more often. Additional openings may occur based on the schedules of the other volunteers, so please list all of your availability on weekdays and weekends.
