Service-Learning Proposal Description


Briefly describe the project and the community to be addressed.
Answer Learn about the history of the Chippewa Valley through exhibits within the Chippewa Valley Museum. Greet and interact with visitors as they enter the museum. Ring up sales at admittance desk and at museum gift shop. Become familiar with merchandise and keep the gift shop clean/straightened. Answer phones and help staff with projects as needed. Learn about and share history of the area with visitors while scooping ice cream, making malts, shakes, sodas, coffee, and specialty items in the old-fashioned ice cream parlor. The museum is located in Carson Park, Eau Claire, a short hike from UWEC.


What is the mission of the agency or organization?
Answer The Chippewa Valley Museum discovers, collects, preserves, and interprets the history and culture of the Chippewa Valley and its people. Our award-winning museum involves the community in Chippewa Valley's history through exhibits, tours, classes, and special events for all age groups.


What skills are required for this project?
Answer Visitor Service volunteers must practice good interpersonal communication by speaking with museum visitors. Positive, respectful interactions are expected with visitors of varying backgrounds and a variety of staff, volunteers, and community members. Careful cash handling and strict adherence to all applicable Health Department regulations are also required.


What are the objectives for the student learning and service?
Answer Objectives for Service-Learning Projects at Chippewa Valley Museum: -Students will gain an understanding of the region's history through exploration of the museum's exhibits and viewing the the Object Theater presentation. -Students will serve the museum by maintaining an engaged and welcoming presence at the Front Desk, Museum Store or in the Ice Cream Parlor. Students will exercise customer service skills and will smile, make eye contact with, and greet each visitor. -Students will seek ways to apply their specialized skillsets or major area of study to advance the museum's mission and maximize their learning.


What are the availability requirements for the student?
Answer Students may volunteer to help on a weekly basis (i.e. every Wednesday) or 1-3 times per month. Volunteers are scheduled to help in three- or four-hour shifts during museum hours (see below). Some exceptions to this schedule may be arranged, especially in the case of special events at the museum or offsite projects as agreed upon. Museum Hours Memorial Day through Labor Day: Weekends: Saturday 10AM-5PM, Sunday 1PM-5PM Weekdays: Monday-Friday 10AM-5PM, hours extended until 8PM on Tuesdays. Museum Hours Labor Day until Memorial Day: Weekends: Saturday 10AM-5PM Weekdays: Tuesday-Friday 1PM-5PM, hours extended until 8PM on Tuesdays.
