Service-Learning Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer Work with the Tandem Mentorship Director/Team to create and publish an online, quarterly (May/August/November/Feb) newsletter. The Chippewa Valley community needs to build supportive relationships for youth who are struggling to grow to be productive and successful adults in our community.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer The mission of Tandem Mentoring is to share life-changing hope with youth facing adversity in our community by pairing youth ages 11-18 with a Christ-centered mentor. We support our mentors with training and plan youth events to recruit young people and provide a place for Mentors and Mentees to develop a trusting relationship.

What skills are required for this project? 

Answer In order to best share the stories of volunteer mentors and mentee experiences for the purposes of recruiting and fundraising, Tandem Mentorship is looking for someone who shows: • Professional quality verbal and written communication • Overall good planning and organization skills • Strong print/online planning and project develpment • Passion for working within the community where they live

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer • Gain experience building a professional quality newsletter from the initial edition • Building knowledge about nonprofit organizations • Communicating the passion behind an organization in an online newsletter format • Working in a professional capacity to promote an organization • Learning to plan for and meet deadlines • Increase awareness of people living outside of the UWEC campus community

5.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer The schedule is flexible but would require meeting with the program director for at least one hour per month for planning, sharing newsletter progress and proofing. 1-3 hours attending Tandem events and/or interviewing program participants.

Answer This position is open immediately: since this newsletter is just now being developed, availability to produce a complete May issue is not a deciding factor in the selection process.
