Service-Learning Proposal Description

Briefly describe the project and the community to be addressed.
Answer The Y's Youth Development Center is a game and activity room used for programming/classes as well as free time for community youth. The room can only be open when supervised either by a parent or volunteer. We are looking for some volunteers who want to hang out with kids, get to know them, play with them, help them with homework...basically develop relationships and serve as mentors to them. Kids will be able to work on homework, hang out, play games (pool, foosball, ping pong, air hockey, board games, etc), and more. Our hope is also to start regular events in the YDC - tournaments, competitions, etc. It will be the responsibility of the student to plan, organize, and execute these events in conjunction with Y staff.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?
Answer The YMCA has been a cornerstone for the Eau Claire Area since 1887. Since its inception, the YMCA has responded to community needs in a variety of ways. Our Mission: We Build Strong Kids, Strong Families, and Strong Communities Our Vision: To be the Premier Family and Youth Activity Center for the Greater Eau Claire Area

What skills are required for this project?
Answer The successful candidate will be friendly and outgoing and have a passion for working and connecting with kids of all ages. You will also be required to have good communication skills and be able to accurately track room usage and needs.

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?
Answer The student will learn to connect with kids, be in tune with their interests, and serve as older role models and mentors for the kids in the program.

What are the availability requirements for the student?
Answer The student must be able to commit to a certain weekly time for a semester or more, if possible. We are hoping to set up a regular schedule for students - for example, a commitment of every Monday from 6-7:30pm for a semester would be ideal.
