Service-Learning Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community to be addressed.
Answer Fresh Start is currently seeking individuals to tutor or mentor one or more of our youth. Some of Fresh Start's participants are working to complete high school, and therefore have time during the day dedicated to finishing school work. The tutor would assist with completing assignments and keeping them on track and motivated. Similarly, mentors would work with youth to keep them motivated in meeting their goals. Volunteers would develop a schedule with the youth and be there for support and encouragement.

2.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?
Answer "Western Dairyland Economic Opportunity Council, Inc. is a private, non-profit community action agency established June 6, 1966, under the Economic Opportunity Act to help disadvantaged individuals in the western Wisconsin counties of Buffalo, Eau Claire, Jackson, and Trempealeau. The agency's mission is to alleviate poverty-related conditions and provide opportunities which enable people to advance economically and socially. The Western Dairyland Fresh Start Program helps build strong communities by involving at-risk young adults, ages 16 to 24, in the construction and rehabilitation of homes in western Wisconsin. When completed, the houses are sold to income-eligible families in the community. Fresh Start combines classroom instruction to help the youth complete studies for their high school diplomas, GED or HSED with other educational goals including independent living skills and the actual ""hands on"" construction work. All program participants are AmeriCorps members, and an hourly wage is paid for construction work. The most important goal of the project is to help youth find their way toward self-sufficiency and build self-esteem through accomplishment, while staying on the path to success."

5.

What are the availability requirements for the student?
Answer Fresh Start's hours are Monday-Thursday, 8am-4:30pm. Students who wish to participate in this service project would need to have some time available during this time. They would then create schedules with fresh start participants which work for the both of them.
