Service-Learning Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community to be addressed.
Answer Painting is needed for the interior of our two Eau Claire homeless shelters and our Black River Falls shelter. We estimate a need of four people per shelter. Every room in both Eau Claire shelters (4 apartments) as well as almost every room in our Black River Falls shelter need the walls painted. Western Dairyland would provide all needed supplies. Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated by our agency and the 40-45 families that live in these shelters per year.

2.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?
Answer "Western Dairyland Economic Opportunity Council, Inc. is a private, non-profit community action agency established June 6, 1966, under the Economic Opportunity Act to help disadvantaged individuals in the western Wisconsin counties of Buffalo, Eau Claire, Jackson, and Trempealeau. The agency's mission is to alleviate poverty-related conditions and provide opportunities which enable people to advance economically and socially. Western Dairyland operates seven homeless shelters in Buffalo, Eau Claire, Jackson and Trempealeau counties for families with children. Our shelters are single-family units which may be occupied for up to 30 days. Each shelter is a completely furnished apartment with bedding, furniture, cooking utensils and cleaning supplies donated by the community. Our shelters are located in safe locations, and every effort is made to maintain the privacy of the families staying there. Family members are referred to other Western Dairyland resources and community organizations for additional help. Our first priority is to provide a safe place to stay for homeless families with children. During their stay, we do everything we can to locate permanent housing and help them on their way to self-sufficiency."
