Service-Learning Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer Federal law and UW system policy identifies "assistance taking notes" as an appropriate accommodation or some students with disabilities. Note-taking facilitates access to classroom lectures. Students will complete service learning hours by volunteering to take notes for students in the classroom who have a notetaking accommodation on their Verification of Individual Services and Accommodation (VISA) plan. This accommodation allows equal access to the course curriculum.

2.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer Learning outcomes for this project (these items should be discussed with your mentor.) Provided Note-taking assistance facilitates access to classroom lectures for students who are registered with Services for Students with Disabilities and have notetaking assistance on his/her Accommodation Plan.

3.

What skills are required for this project?

Answer Students are to attend class on a regular basis and take comprehensive, legible notes. Notetakers should convey the information accurately, giving the content and the spirit of the speaker, to the best of their ability. Students are required to email notes to the professor or to the student to whom they are taking notes.

4.

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer The student will take detailed, legible lecture notes each class period. The student will email notes each class period to the professor or the student who requires the accommodation of notetaking. The student will reflect on how this service has helped a student with the notetaking accommodation gain equal access to the course content.

5.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer The student should attend all class sessions. If the student cannot attend a class session, the student should make arrangements for another classmate to take notes and email the notes to the professor and/or the student
