Service-Learning Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer This project looks for tutors to support students in the Chinese program to improve language proficiency and cultural knowledge. The community is students in the Chinese language classes and the foreign culture class.

2.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer The Chinese program is to develop students' Chinese language proficiency and intercultural awareness through interaction with people from the target culture.

3.

What skills are required for this project? 

Answer 1. Communicative skills in both English and Chinese. 2. Good listening skills. 3. Being respectful and patient. 4. Engaging partners in conversations.

4.

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer The students will be able to: 1. Present Chinese culture in both English and Chinese. 2. Interact with learners from other cultures in a respectful way to discuss various topics. 3. Gain some cultural knowledge about American culture.

5.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer One hour each week Wednesdays 2-2:50pm

Answer Assessments: 1. Submit a weekly survey on Canvas. 2. Please write a 3-4 page reflection paper on your participation in this program. When you finish the paper, you may email it to me kongk@uwec.edu . The paper should include but not limited to the following information. • What did you do? • What did you learn? • What were your contributions to the program and what skills did you develop?
