Service-Learning Proposal Description


Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer The service-learning volunteer will assist with maintenance of biology instructional lab facilities at the UW - Eau Claire - Barron County Campus. The student may also assist biology instructors with other activities relating to preparing for instruction or research.


What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer The Mission Statement of UW-Eau Claire is; "We foster in one another creativity, critical insight, empathy, and intellectual courage, the hallmarks of a transformative liberal education and the foundation for active citizenship and lifelong inquiry."


What skills are required for this project? 

Answer Ability to read and speak English. Has normal or near normal vision. Can perform basic computer operations, such as searching the Internet, entering numbers into a spreadsheet, or creating a Word document. Can perform basic maintenance, such as washing and storing glassware, watering plants, and sorting lab equipment based on oral or written instructions.


What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer Students will become familiar with processes for setting up and dismantling experiments or demonstrations for biology instruction. Students may occasionally execute experiments that are being considered for inclusion in lab courses. Students may also search the Internet for various resources. The student would be assisting the operations of the Biology Department at the UW - EC - Barron County Campus.


What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer The student should be available for 1-2 hours per week for most weeks of the semester. The schedule would be determined based on the student's coursework and other commitments, and the schedule and needs of the supervisor.
