Service-Learning Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer This project contributes to the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire's efforts to continue certification as a Tree Campus Higher Education. Students will update diameter breast height measurements for the campus tree species mapped on campus. Students will make a lasting contribution to creating estimates for offsetting campus carbon emissions and updating the campus species map for use in university instruction and research.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer UW -Eau Claire Facilities ensures a quality built and natural environment conducive to student learning in creating a supportive campus community.

3.

What skills are required for this project? 

Answer Interest in and basic knowledge of tree species identification (training and tree identification materials provided). Experience using applications via smart phone or tablet.

4.

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer Students will gain an understanding of tree identification and geographical mapping skills. They will also gain experience working with an on campus department. Students will make a lasting contribution to estimates for offsetting campus carbon emissions and a species map for use in university instruction and research.

5.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer Students have opportunities to work on this project in the following timeframes: Fall -2021, Spring - 2022 , Summer- 2022, and Fall -2022. During spring and fall 2022, students need to commit to 3 hours per week. For the summer, students need to work with the supervisor to schedule 30 hours. The work schedule is very flexible. Once trained students can establish the hours and days of the week they wish to work.
