Service-Learning Proposal Description

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer Prime for Life is an AODA workshop designed for youth to learn about high-risk behaviors (including alcohol and substance use) and how those behaviors and thought patterns might impact their own beliefs, values, and goals. The facilitator will help the workshop leader encourage participation from the youth in discussion and in activities.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer Restorative Justice seeks to repair the harm done by a crime through healing and reintegration into the community for everyone involved. In addition to an emphasis on the healing and needs of the victim, this also includes helping an offender (in this case, youth) understand the responsibility of their choices and eventually mature in areas of life such as decision-making, relationships, school, and personal growth.

What skills are required for this project?

Answer A Prime for Life facilitator needs to be able to listen well, ask probing questions, and encourage discussion among the youth that attend the workshop. Empathy and a non-judgmental attitude are also critical for this project.

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer To learn how to help facilitate a workshop for youth with challenges in their lives (specifically an AODA workshop). To help youth in their thought patterns, decision- making, and overall behavior.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer Prime for Life is held on Wednesday or Thursday afternoons/evenings from 3:30pm-7:30pm.
