Service-Learning Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer Afghanistan has for many years seen a significant degree of political instability. Recently, with the withdrawal of U.S. troops from the region, tens of thousands of Afghans have fled their homeland seeking peace and stability. The U.S. has been instrumental in helping to evacuate many Afghans. Today, over 13,000 refugees from Afghanistan are temporarily housed at Fort McCoy military base, about 90 miles from Eau Claire. There are many volunteers who work daily to support this population.

2.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer Service-Learning is an opportunity for students at UW-Eau Claire to give back to their local or home community or even a community found abroad. It provides a way to learn skills, investigate careers, and build a personal network. Service-Learning makes education a collaborative effort; students benefit society by exercising the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.

3.

What skills are required for this project?

Answer attention to detail, neatness, follow-through

4.

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer I'm looking for someone to create 75-100 notecard size (maybe laminated or something that wears well) cards with a few key phrases in Dari and Pashto. It is not as necessary they are written in their script, but are transliterated phonetically. I would provide a list of people to contact to help with translations. Familiarity with the language is not an expectation!

5.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer There will be a couple of meetings to go over the project plan but much of the work can be done independently.

6.

Additional information (not required).

Answer **Priority given to December and January grads**
