Service-Learning Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer There are children in the Eau Claire Area School District who are either behind grade level in their reading comprehension skills or have little to no interest in reading. The Covid 19 pandemic has affected many children's literacy development. This project is meant as a way to foster joy and a feeling of success in the area of reading. Reading Partners is a fantastic way to make an impact on the youth in the Eau Claire community. Volunteers will be partnered up with a child or a small group of children. Meetings will take place in an elementary school, a home setting, or virtually. University volunteers may work individually or in pairs.

2.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer The mission of Reading Partners is to share the joys of reading with children to improve literacy skills and encourage lifelong readers.

3.

What skills are required for this project?

Answer Volunteers need to complete a background check, enjoy working with children ages 5-11, and be willing to serve as a model for a children's reading. They must be fluent in the English language, organized, dependable, and able to meet with a child on a regular weekly basis.

4.

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer The objective for the student learning and service is to meet the service learning requirements of UWEC while becoming a part of larger efforts to improve literacy skills for K-5 students attending Title 1 schools in the Eau Claire community. Some students can also use this volunteering experience to meet the field experience requirements for education majors at UWEC. The goal remains to help elementary students see how much fun reading can be, while focusing on the individual interests and developmental reading skills of the child.

5.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer Volunteers must commit to regular weekly meetings with the child or children they are matched with. Each volunteer must complete an initial orientation/training session provided by the Reading Partnership Coordinator. The training will count towards the service hours requirement. Volunteers can get started at any point during the academic year and continue into the next year if wanted/needed. University students may partner up with other reading partners for transportation.

6.

Additional information (not required).

Answer The Reading Partners Coordinator office is located in Centennial Hall 3210. She is available to assist you as needed and will provided you with training, reading materials, games, and support throughout the project. Meeting times will be based on the volunteers availability and ECASD schedule.
