Service-Learning Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer We're recruiting a pool of volunteers to help move furniture on an as-needed basis for our clients who are entering or leaving our homeless shelters. You'll have the option to help when you're available; we generally need assistance once or twice per month during the day, with occasional volunteer opportunities in the early evening. Volunteers would also be needed to assist in picking up furniture donations. Your assistance with this would be vital to helping our local homeless families and individuals. Western Dairyland operates seven homeless shelters in western Wisconsin for families with children. Our shelters are single-family apartments which may be occupied for up to 30 days. Each shelter is completely furnished with bedding, furniture, decorations and cooking utensils donated by the community. Volunteers are needed to clean the apartments when families move out each month. This includes cleaning floors, windows and walls, cleaning the kitchen and bathroom, and other minor chores. Minor repairs may also need to be made to shelters.

2.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer The agency's mission is to alleviate poverty related conditions and provide opportunities which enable people to advance economically and socially.

3.

What skills are required for this project?

Answer The ability to move and lift heavy boxes and furniture is required. Volunteers will also need to be able to stand on their feet for a couple of hours while moving or cleaning. Communication skills and respect for others and others' property is also a must.

4.

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer This volunteer opportunity will help the community by providing service to unhoused individuals and families in the area. The student would be exposed to people who may have very different life experiences than they do, and would be able to learn about the realities of poverty and being unhoused, as well as gain experience working with and communicating with unhoused individuals.

5.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer Moving opportunities could come up once or twice a month depending on what is happening at the agency. Cleaning opportunities could also come up once or twice a month depending on the situations at the shelters.

6.

Additional information (not required).

Answer Volunteers will be asked to sign confidentiality forms as they will be moving people into homes/homeless shelters or cleaning these locations. If someone has a truck that is able to haul larger items that would be incredibly helpful.
