Service-Learning Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer Pepin County runs two recycling collection sites, which are each managed by a site attendant. During open hours of operation, site attendants are typically busy helping direct residents to the proper disposal locations and writing receipts for items that require payment. Site attendants occasionally need assistance with keeping the sites clean, helping residents, and managing the recyclables that come into the site.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer The Pepin County Recycling/Solid Waste Program operates the drop-off collection sites and provides resource management information and education services to the public.

3.

What skills are required for this project? 

Answer Friendly, willingness to help and educate others, ability to lift 25-50 pounds, basic understanding of items that are recyclable and items that are considered solid waste. Students may be asked to help pick up, relocate, or breakdown items that are improperly disposed.

4.

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer After assisting at the collection sites students will be able to: Identify what basic materials can be recycled. Identify some of the environmental benefits of recycling. Examine their own personal activities that create waste and impact landfills and resource usage. Make personal changes to their waste output so that they can create a positive impact on the environment. Appreciate customer and community service

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer Students can work whenever sites are open to the public: Waubeek Site (N6799 County Rd D, Durand, WI 54736): Monday: 1:00pm - 4:45pm Wednesday: 1:00pm - 5:45pm Friday: 1:00pm - 4:45pm Saturday: 8:00am - 12:45pm Pepin Site (W9326 Trail Rd, Pepin, WI 54759) Monday: 1:00pm - 4:45pm Wednesday: 1:00pm - 5:45pm Saturday: 8:00am - 1:45pm
