Service-Learning Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer UWEC has partnered with the IRS and our host, Western Dairyland, to participate in the VITA Program. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program is an IRS initiative designed to support free tax preparation service for the underserved through various partner organizations.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer The IRS mission is to "provide America's taxpayers top quality service by helping them understand and meet their tax responsibilities and by applying the tax law with integrity and fairness to all."

3.

What skills are required for this project? 

Answer Volunteers must pass a Basic IRS VITA exam to demonstrate general tax knowledge. Data entry and basic customer service skills are also required.

4.

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer This service helps low- to moderate-income individuals, persons with disabilities, the elderly, and limited English speakers file their taxes each year.

5.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer Student must be available for 4-hour blocks of time, resulting in either a 15 or 30 hour credit, depending on the actual hours worked.

Additional information (not required).

Answer VITA site will run all Fridays in March 2022 from 1-5PM and first Friday in April 2022, 1-5PM. Site is 418 Wisconsin St, Eau Claire, WI 54703. You do not have to attend all - only for the hours you wish to receive in blocks of 15 or 30.
