Service-Learning Proposal Description


Briefly describe the project and the community to be addressed.
Answer Planters along Barstow Street and in a few select planting areas downtown need 1 - 2 times weekly attention. It would include weeding, thinning and garbage pick up in the planting beds.


What is the mission of the agency or organization?
Answer The South Barstow Business Improvement District (BID) works to encourage and promote the development and vitality of downtown. Planting areas along the streets have been funded by the BID.


What skills are required for this project?
Answer Planting bed maintenance includes bending and lifting, walking. Interaction with pedestrians who have questions or comments about downtown is a possibility. Business owners may strike up a conversation also to discuss downtown.


What are the objectives for the student learning and service?
Answer Awareness of beautification processes in a downtown and how they impact the community. Learning about plant types and growth; weed maintenance. Learning the impact of litter in the community.


What are the availability requirements for the student?
Answer This opportunity offers flexibility! Service-learning students can set their own weekly hours.


Additional information (not required).
Answer A map of the plantings will be provided. An orientation will be personally provided to volunteers also. Gloves and bags for weeds will also be provided. Service-learning students are greatly appreciated!
