Service-Learning Proposal Description


Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer The service-learning project will assist the Christine Center in maintaining our natural wooded setting, walking trails, and garden areas which are frequented by Center visitors and retreatants. The service-learning student will assist with outdoor projects and tasks that may include: 1) re-planting flowers/shrubs, weeding flower beds; 2) removing branch debris from established walking trails; 3) clearing fallen brush debris from campground sites; and/or 4) breaking brush into kindling for use in the wood-burning areas.


What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer The Christine Center was founded 40 years ago as a non-denominational retreat center in the spiritual tradition of St. Francis of Assisi. Our mission is to promote spiritual deepening for global transformation. Our Franciscan lived values include service, respect, hospitality, compassion, peace, hope, joy, integrity, vision, and care for the land entrusted to us.


What skills are required for this project? 

Answer Ability to work outdoors for a period of 2-3 hours at a time Ability to perform tasks noted above from a seated, kneeling and/or standing position Ability to follow the instructions of the onsite supervisor Ability to work on a project alongside others or alone


What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer Participate in a group service activity (if joining a volunteer work weekend) Assist in beautifying the grounds in support of our guests retreat experience


What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer Individually selected date(s) with prior arrangement of supervisor. If commuting, projects can be from 4-6 hours per session. If unable to commute, longer projects can be designed (e.g., during a weekend) with an option for onsite housing and meals, with prior arrangement and subject to availability. One weekend project may provide up to 15 hours of service learning.
