Service-Learning Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer Volunteers assist in setting up, running, and closing down public and private planetarium shows. This will provide useful assistance to the planetarium director while adding more diverse voices to planetarium shows.

2.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer The L.E. Phillips Planetarium provides a unique experience of the night sky to educate the Chippewa Valley about astronomy through weekly public shows as well as private shows for school field trips and other organizations.

3.

What skills are required for this project?

Answer Volunteers must have a passion for astronomy and be comfortable either speaking with the public or working with the various projectors and other equipment used in putting on shows.

4.

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer Students will gain confidence in public speaking, particularly in translating their passion for the night sky into public outreach. Additionally, they will learn about designing an engaging multimedia presentation, as they will be involved in designing new planetarium shows.

5.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer Students should be available during public shows for the planetarium, which are currently scheduled for 7:00 PM on Thursday nights during the school year. They should arrive early to help set up and plan on staying late to ensure everything is put away. Typically, this means they will start around 6:30 PM and finish before 8:30 PM each Thursday. Additionally, students may help in private shows for field trips as they are available.

6.

Additional information (not required).

Answer The precise "end" of this term is nebulous, since the number of hours will depend on how many private shows are planned that the volunteer is available for.
