Service-Learning Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer Our International Students are far from home and looking to make local connections, learn more about the culture, share everyday experiences, and practice their English skills. This program would be to partner with our students and either meet one in one or in small groups or help with our events.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer The mission behind Community Connections and Conversation Partners Program at UWEC-Barron County is to provide a network of students and community members to be a bridge for international students to feel welcomed, know they belong, and get the most out of their time here. Also to help the campus and community become more inclusive, empathetic, and culturally sensitive.

What skills are required for this project? 

Answer A welcoming attitude, willingness to learn and listen, and a desire to connect and help.

4.

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer Objectives are to practice hospitality, communication and listening skills, and to practice and grow in cultural awareness and empathy.

5.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer 1-2 hours per week. Flexible schedule Monday-Sunday. Flexible start and end dates. Flexible hours. Can help up to 30 hours easily or choose ahead of time hours needed. Can either choose to help with events or can meet one on one with students weekly for lunch/dinner. Supervisor will help connect, match, and give ideas for ways for students to connect and spend time.
