Service-Learning Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer Our organization offers free adult literacy classes to people in the Chippewa Valley. One of the services that we offer during these classes (9am-11am Monday-Thursday) is free childcare on site. This program allows parents who would normally have to stay home with their children the ability to attend class while we watch their child.

2.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer Literacy Chippewa Valley's mission is to empower adults and their families to reach their educational, employment, and life goals through free, learner-focused literacy programs.

3.

What skills are required for this project?

Answer A desire to work with children 4 and under. Any experience with young children, babysitting etc., is helpful but not required. This position will be assisting our childcare coordinator from 9am-11am while class is in session. Patience and a love of reading books and playing with children are all beneficial for this role.

4.

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer The student would ideally come out of this experience with a better understanding of young child care and education. They will also gain insight into how education and interaction goals are tracked at an organization like ours in order to remain in compliance with various grants and avenues of funding. Students with an interest in non-profit operations would also have the opportunity to see different parts of the organization and volunteer in additional ways.

5.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer We are looking for assistance 9am-11am Monday-Thursday for the remainder of this semester, ending on June 2nd. These hours can be filled by multiple volunteers, so availability for class hours every day is not required by the service-learner.

6.

Additional information (not required).

Answer This is an excellent opportunity for anyone in an education or childcare program. The student will get experience caring for and educating young children primarily from families whose first language is not English. This position would also be beneficial to anyone looking at the non-profit sector after graduation and can lead to other opportunities to help the organization if the student is interested.
