Service-Learning Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education has been regularly running a program for over 30 years called the Foot and Nail Care Clinical during which 30 nurses attend a 5-day Clinical, provide free foot and nail care to local seniors and others who need assistance caring for their feet, and fulfill a portion of their certification requirements. This type of training is difficult to find and under-represented in other medical training programs, resulting in an aging population with very few resources to reach out to for their specific foot and nail care needs. This clinic provides a learning and practice opportunity for nurses to further their skill set to better aid their patients, and it also creates a community outreach opportunity by offering foot and nail care to the local population at no cost.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education is dedicated to supporting people seeking education to improve their lives by providing innovative programming in a variety of areas. Utilizing resources from UW-Eau Claire and UW System, we develop our programming through collaboration with communities and professionals working in their fields. All of our programs are designed with inclusivity in mind and are focused on providing the best educational value.

What skills are required for this project? 

Answer Organization, ability to communicate clearly and effectively, customer service skills (while registering clients over the phone or checking them in in-person), friendliness, listening to and following directions, ability to lift 30 pounds (would be helpful for set-up, but not necessary to help during the running of the clinical or registration sections).

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer We hope students will gain an appreciation for the benefits of service to our community and the unique opportunities continuing education can provide for creating a mutually beneficial relationship between different communities. You will also get some practice honing your customer service and organizational skills, and hopefully enjoy spending some time with elder members of our local community and the surrounding areas.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer Students would need to be available for as little as 2 hours at a time (the smallest time slots for volunteers) or up to full days during the Clinical and phone registration periods. The options are as follows: Phone Registration: • ** we will also need to schedule a brief meeting prior to your shift for phone training for this task • Monday, October 3 – 8:30AM – 4:30PM • Tuesday, October 4 – 8:30AM – 4:30PM; Venue Assistance (supply load-up & drop-off, venue set-up): • Thursday, October 13 – 12:30PM – 4PM; Clinical days (set-up & check-ins daily, last day also pack-up) • Monday, October 17 – 2:30PM – 4PM • Tuesday, October 18 – 7:30AM - 4:30PM • Wednesday, October 19 – 7:30AM – 4:30PM • Thursday, October 20 – 7:30AM – 4:30PM • Friday, October 21 – 7:30AM – 4PM

Answer We understand the medical nature of this program might alarm some potential volunteers; we can assure that you will only be dealing with the supply and customer service aspects of the program. The nurses will be in a separate area while handling client care. Breakfast and lunch will be provided if you work a full day during the actual Clinical event (October 18-21)
