Service-Learning Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer The service-learning volunteer will serve as a student academic (teaching) apprentice in a first or second year chemistry laboratory. The volunteer will assist the laboratory instructor in answering student questions, demonstrating laboratory skills, and help create a welcoming and supportive environment for learning.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer The Mission Statement of UW-Eau Claire is; "We foster learning and collaboration through our spaces, services, people, and resources."

3.

What skills are required for this project? 

Answer The volunteer needs to have successfully completed the course they will be the SAA for. The volunteer needs to be willing to engage with students in the laboratory and have basic laboratory and problem solving skills. The volunteer also needs to have a commitment to providing a welcoming learning environment.

4.

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer *The volunteer will enhance their knowledge of chemistry and their ability to communicate that knowledge. *The volunteer will support student learning in the laboratory by assisting the laboratory instructor in answering questions and demonstrating laboratory skills. *The volunteer will engage with students in the laboratory regarding their experience at UWEC. *The volunteer will explore a personal sense of responsibility to community through the service experience.

5.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer The student should be available for 2-3 hours per week each week of the semester. The schedule would be determined based on the student's coursework and other commitments, and the schedule and needs of the supervisor and/or course availability.

Answer A chemistry/biochemistry or chemistry/biochemistry adjacent major is not required.
