Service-Learning Proposal Description


Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer The service-learning volunteer will serve as a student academic (teaching) apprentice in PHYS 240: Computational Physics. The volunteer will assist the instructor in answering student questions in laboratory sections, as well as promoting a welcoming environment with peer expertise.


What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer The Mission Statement of UW-Eau Claire is; "We foster learning and collaboration through our spaces, services, people, and resources."


What skills are required for this project? 

Answer The volunteer must have completed PHYS 240 with a grade of B or better. Furthermore, they must be comfortable working with other students to lead them to their own solutions to questions. The volunteer must also be committed to fostering a welcoming learning environment.


What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer The volunteer will deepen their command of the python programming language and its applications to problems of relevance to physics and engineering, as well as their ability to communicate that knowledge. The volunteer will support student learning in the course by assisting the instructor in answering questions and encouraging students.


What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer The student should be available for 2 hours per week each week of the semester as well as for two hours during finals week. The schedule would be determined based on the student's coursework and other commitments, and the schedule and needs of the supervisor and/or course availability.
