Service-Learning Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer Volunteer opportunities include assisting in the kitchen with washing dishes and cleaning the dining room, doing outdoor projects with gardens and maintenance, and/or odd tasks around the Center.

2.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer The Christine Center's mission began 40 years ago in the deeply rooted ideals of the Franciscan principles of contemplation, hospitality, compassion, simplicity, transformation, and care for our Earth Community. Over the years, we have grown into a thriving and inclusive haven for seekers from many paths, transcending boundaries of nationality and culture. Our Franciscan lived values include service, respect, hospitality, compassion, peace, hope, joy, integrity, vision, and care for the land entrusted to us.

3.

What skills are required for this project?

Answer Perform tasks with a calm demeanor and sensitive awareness of guest experience. Follow the instructions of the onsite supervisor. Able to work independently or with a team. Able to stand and/or walk around performing tasks from a standing position up to 3 hours. Lift and carry up to 30 pounds.

4.

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer Participate in service activity with others (Center staff, other volunteers, guests). Assist in maintaining a peaceful and supportive environment in support of our guests' retreat experiences.

5.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer Onsite retreats are held most weekends throughout the year, from Friday evening meal through the midday meal on Sunday. Some retreats take place on weekdays. Ideally, the student would be available for 3 to 6 hour shifts each day during the duration of the retreat. Depending on the tasks assigned to the student, one weekend could provide 12-20 hours of service-learning experience. One week-long retreat would provide a minimum 25-30 hours of service-learning.

6.

Additional information (not required).

Answer Meals are provided for volunteers while working on site. Rustic housing is provided for those unable to commute. Students are invited to participate in the weekday meditations and the use of our extensive spiritual library. There are numerous trails to hike in the spring to fall and to snowshoe in the winter.
