Service-Learning Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer Discovering Community and Commonality Through Service in Puerto Rico is a domestic immersion program that allows students to connect with a mixture of cultures while serving the needs of community organizations in Puerto Rico. We will be working with a a variety of organizations that focus on disaster relief efforts, environmental protection, youth services, and socioeconomic development.

2.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer This project will be working with Community Collaborations International to establish the most pressing needs at the time. Their mission statement is as follows: “CC International puts volunteers to work where they are needed most and provides them with the support they need to get the job done!”

3.

What skills are required for this project?

Answer This program requires students to travel to Puerto Rico, perform physically taxing volunteer tasks, walk for varying distances, stand for several hours, and be exposed to the elements of the Caribbean. Specific skills or requirements will vary based on the needs of each partner organization we work with, but all training needed will be done on-site. Students must also be open to learning, putting themselves in new environments, and connecting with new people using an open mind and perspective.

4.

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer This program will allow students to learn more about the needs of those living in Puerto Rico, they will develop a deeper understanding of the relationship between the mainland United States and the island territory, they will discuss the systems of privilege and oppression, and get hands-on service experience related to the topics addressed above. This program also will allow students to be exposed to a different culture while still being connected domestically.

5.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer Students must apply to participate in this program and be selected by the trip leaders. Students must participate in all pre-trip meetings and discussions and complete all requirements for travel to Puerto Rico.
