Service-Learning Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer The Alternative Spring Break trip is an opportunity for students to explore the concepts of servant leadership and social justice – specifically around issues of poverty, homelessness and socioeconomic status. We will be working with a variety of service sites that work in different ways to address the needs in the greater Indianapolis community.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer Each site we work with has a different mission but all focus on serving others surrounding the topics of food security, homelessness, and poverty. Some sites we have worked with in the past include Jameson Camp, Gleaners Food Bank, Wheeler Mission Ministries, Rebuilding the Wall, and Providence Cristo Rey High School. All sites will require a hands-on approach to the topic and interactions with those we are serving.

What skills are required for this project? 

Answer Students participating need to have an open mind, be willing to learn, be willing to participate in any task assigned to them by the service sites, help create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all participants and need to be willing to represent UW-Eau Claire in a positive light at all times. Additionally, some service sites might require some physical labor, lifting, twisting, and standing for several hours. Accommodations can be made for students unable to perform these tasks.

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer Students can expect to learn about the issues of homelessness, poverty, and food security in the Indianapolis are, as well as how it ties back to the Eau Claire community. Also, they can expect to interact with individuals different then themselves, engage in meaningful nightly reflections and articulate their experiences, work collaboratively as a team, understand servant leadership and its core principles, and develop a plan for after the trip to incorporate and apply what they have learned.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer Students must apply to participate in this program, need to be available for the entirety of the trip, must attend all pre-trip meetings to discuss trip expectations, what to pack, etc.
