Service-Learning Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer Evolving Wellness Safe Haven Teen Center is a place of compassion, understanding and kindness. It is a safe place to unwind, unplug, connect with peers and enjoy a meal. Evolving Wellness opens their doors every Thursday, 3 - 7 p.m. for our teen community! Teens are welcome to come after school to relax, do some homework, and have a little camaraderie. Safe Haven Teen Center focuses on acceptance, coping skills, mental health, and more! The teen center is a safe place for teens who need a place to work through their problems and talk through their struggles.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer Evolving Wellness offers a proactive approach to healing the body, mind, and spirit for our community to become well, be well, and stay well.

3.

What skills are required for this project? 

Answer Evolving Wellness is looking for enthusiastic individuals that would like to work with the local teen population. Skills required for this role are experience or patience with youth, leadership, positive attitude, flexibility, ability to collaborate, knowledge of mental health and coping skills, ability to take charge, and more! Students majoring in Education, Psychology, Social Work, and other related majors are encouraged to apply!

4.

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer Active participation with our teen population focusing on mental health and coping strategies. This project is an opportunity for students to use skills and knowledge in real-life situations with teens. Your objectives with this role would be to help facilitate our Safe Haven Teen Center nights as well as working with the executive director on developing a curriculum around mental health, teen struggles, and more for the Center.

5.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer Students should have availability during the week for meetings with the owner to work on the development of programming and curriculum for the Center (goal for it to become school-approved). Students will need most Thursday evenings available (from 3 - 7 p.m.), as well as a flexible schedule to accommodate meetings to plan with the owner.

6.

Additional information (not required).

Answer The program template will include three or four ice breaker questions, a facilitator topic presentation, two or more chat questions, and three or more activities. Example topics include: self doubt/self esteem, stress/anxiety, and life pressures.
