Service-Learning Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer Every six months Western Dairyland conducts a count of the individuals that are currently unhoused to determine need of housing supports in the area. This count is done by every agency in the state on the same night, at the same time, to ensure individuals are not counted twice. Starting at 11:00 PM, Western Dairyland employees and volunteers go out into the community and attempt to find individuals that are currently unhoused to talk with them about their situation, and to connect them with agencies that can assist them in the area.

2.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer Western Dairyland's mission is to alleviate poverty related conditions and provide opportunities which enable people to advance economically and socially.

3.

What skills are required for this project?

Answer Effective communication skills. A short training will be provided prior to the event to ensure volunteers are prepared for the PIT count night.

4.

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer Students can learn more about the needs of unhoused individuals in the area, what support networks are in place, and what it is like to work with a disadvantaged population.

5.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer There are various stages to the Point in Time count. We need volunteers to help set up for the night of the PIT, we need volunteers to assist in conducting the PIT count on the night of January 25th, 2023, and we need volunteers to help with the after-PIT count in the following days. Time ranges can be flexible depending on student availability before, during, and after the week of PIT.

6.

Additional information (not required).

Answer Western Dairyland relies on the help of volunteers to facilitate the PIT count. We strongly appreciate all you do in the community!
