Service-Learning Proposal Description

Briefly describe the project and the community to be addressed.
Answer Volunteer for Allina Health Hospice patients and families. You may provide companionship, help with errands, provide respite time for caregivers, assist with writing/reading, fix a meal and in many other ways support patients and families on their end of life journey. Patients reside in their own homes or residential care facilities in western Wisconsin and the greater Twin Cities metro area.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?
Answer The mission of Allina Health Hospice is to meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of patients at end of life. We provide support and information for the patient's family and caregivers. Our volunteers serve as part of the team and support patients and families wherever the patient calls home. It may be their own home or a residential care facility. Volunteers serve in a variety of roles; companionship, respite support, even for specific projects or needs across the state of MN and in western WI.

What skills are required for this project?
Answer Really it’s all about giving your attentive presence to another – you focus on your assigned patient to be a “companion”. We’re looking for people with big hearts, who are good listeners, and OK with just being quiet and sitting with a patient sometimes too. You need - common sense, the ability to keep confidentiality and good personal boundaries.

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?
Answer Complete interview, pass required state background study, followed by 5 hours of online hospice volunteer training and a 1X three hour group wrap-up session in St. Paul. Gain knowledge of hospice/healthcare/social/intergrative services. Commit to 30 plus hours of service once you have completed training.

What are the availability requirements for the student?
Answer 1-3 hours of time per week, when assigned to a patient
