Service-Learning Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer The University of Wisconsin Eau Claire is hosting the NCUR 2023 conference on our campus April 13-15. The National Conference of Undergraduate Research (NCUR) is an annual conference held at different institutions in the U.S each year. This is the first in person conference since 2019. This conference will bring upwards of 4,000 people from around the world to our campus. Due to the size of this conference, we will need assistance from the entire campus to create a welcoming environment, support high quality undergraduate research and assist in service to the guests of our campus.

2.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer The mission of the Council for Undergraduate Research (CUR) is to support and promote high-quality mentored undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative inquiry. The mission of the University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire is to foster in one another creativity, critical insight, empathy, and intellectual courage; which are the hallmarks of a transformative liberal education and the foundation for active citizenship and lifelong inquiry. The NCUR 2023 planning committee is adhering to the missions of both organizations to bring together creativity and lifelong inquiry.

3.

What skills are required for this project?

Answer Students participating need to have an open mind, be willing to learn, and be willing to be adaptable to the needs of the conference. Students will help create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all participants for the NCUR 2023 conference and represent UW-Eau Claire in a positive light at all times. A variety of skills will be required and students will have the opportunity to choose their volunteer shifts based on their skill sets. We will have volunteer opportunities in four (4) different categories: a. Fairs and Sessions b. Community Engagement, Pre-conference and campus fun c. Hospitality d. Master Volunteers (higher level of skill required)

4.

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer Students will expect to learn critical thinking and adaptability in a participant focused environment. They can also expect to interact with individuals different than themselves and work collaboratively with a team of volunteers. These skills and experiences are fundamental to a liberal education and active citizenship to our campus community and beyond.

5.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer Students must sign up for an appropriate shift to equal 15 hours OR 30 hours (or more). Part of the 15 hours will include time for completing an NCUR volunteer training canvas course, which will be sent after signing up for their volunteer duties and shifts. Shifts will occur from Wednesday, April 12, 2023 through Saturday, April 15, 2023.
