Service-Learning Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer Child Life at UW-Eau Claire works to provide comfort and distraction to hospitalized children in our local and surrounding communities. This organization will work with local Child Life Specialists as well as those that work with children 18 years and under to provide necessary comfort measures to children experiencing trauma and/or a hospitalization for a variety of reasons. This will be achieved through fundraising for tie blanket materials, activity kits, crafts, calming find it games, and much more. Students will be able to earn their service-learning hours through these fundraisers, volunteer events in the community as well as guest speaker information.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer Our goal is to increase the understanding of the Child Life profession by acquiring knowledge and experiences through guest speakers, conferences, and volunteer experiences. In addition, we want to provide support and comfort items/materials to children and adolescents experiencing stressful life events in our community.

What skills are required for this project?

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer To provide psychosocial support through comfort items and volunteer support, to children and adolescents experiencing stressful life events. This will primarily be hospitalized children. Unique goals will be achieved through collaboration with advisor/instructor- Jessica Wilfore, Child Life Specialist, as well as Child Life Specialists empl0yed at hospitals within WI & MN.

5.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer Available to help with fundraising each semester, volunteer events as they arise. This will be determined in collaboration with Child Life Specialists as they run low on needed comfort materials (blankets, stress balls, etc) as well as help with special holiday events. Estimated 15-30 hours a semester.
