Service-Learning Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer Hosted by the Eau Claire Area Hmong Mutual Assistance Association, Inc. (ECAHMAA), visitors to Eau Claire HmongFest 2023 will experience and celebrate our rich Hmong culture through an exciting two days of authentic Hmong food and craftsmanship, singing and dancing competitions, sports tournaments, and a night festival featuring local and national Hmong singers and influencers. This event will raise funds to help support Hmong community members, particularly Hmong youth, with extracurricular activities, scholarships, and culture & language classes. Some of the proceeds will also go towards building a commercial kitchen to facilitate traditional Hmong cultural practices, as well as contribute to entrepreneurial opportunities and ECAHMAA’s direct services and programs. Students will work with event coordinators and local law enforcement to provide event security in an outdoor setting.

2.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer Eau Claire HmongFest seeks to foster strong relationships within the Hmong community and with wider community members who want to experience and celebrate unique aspects of Hmong culture in a fun and vibrant setting.

3.

What skills are required for this project?

Answer Interpersonal and communication skills are required as student volunteers will interact with festival coordinators, members of the public, and other volunteers. Other useful skills include: • Observation/surveillance • Patrolling • Access control/bagging/scanning. Helpful experience includes: • Guest/customer service • Law Enforcement • Military. Reliability is also essential as Eau Claire HmongFest depends on volunteers to run successfully. All activities will take place outdoors, some on uneven terrain.

4.

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer Objectives for student learning and service include building professional communication skills. Student volunteers will interact with festival coordinators, members of the public, and other volunteers. By volunteering, students have the opportunity to communicate with a variety of people in a relaxed setting. Students will also develop problem solving skills as they encounter various questions to answer and obstacles to overcome when assisting festival attendees.

5.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer Volunteers must attend one mandatory organizational meeting, date to be determined. Volunteers must be available for the event on Saturday and/or Sunday, June 17—June 18, 2023 for at least one 4-hour shift. Volunteers will choose from 4-hour shifts between the hours of 6:30am-10pm on Saturday and between the hours of 6:30am-6pm on Sunday. Volunteers will receive one meal coupon for each shift, and one free event admission per day of volunteering.
