Service-Learning Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer The project is to organize and digitize the campus archives in order to make them more accessible to faculty, staff, students, alumni, and any other outside researchers.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer UW Eau Claire's mission statement: We foster in one another creativity, critical insight, empathy, and intellectual courage, the hallmarks of a transformative liberal education and the foundation for active citizenship and lifelong inquiry.

3.

What skills are required for this project? 

Answer Good organization skills and basic computer skills are necessary. Experience scanning photos and documents is a plus. Student will be working with old and sometimes delicate materials, so care in handling objects and attention to detail is important.

4.

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer The object is to make materials in the archives more accessible to faculty, staff, students, alumni, and the greater community. Students will learn to sort records and recognize valuable historical documents. They will also learn to scan materials gain important organizational skills. We will also be creating displays using the items in the archives for the library and (possibly) around campus or online.

5.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer Ideally, students would work 2 hours a week around their class schedules, although, 1 hour per week would also be fine.
