Service-Learning Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer This summer the Center for Communication Disorders is partnering with Annie Jackson, a highly experienced adaptive music teacher. Ms. Jackson will lead two small groups in music classes for 6-week sessions over the summer from June 19th-July 28th. These groups are intended for ages 3-5 and 6-8. However, there is flexibility in age ranges. Speech-language therapy student clinicians will work with Ms. Jackson to support communication, social interaction, and language development within music activities. Activities will be tailored to the strengths and needs of the group.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer To serve families while providing undergraduate students learning opportunities that apply principles of practice to authentic interaction.

What skills are required for this project? 

Answer Students have expressed interest in learning about how to support children's' communication and language through the medium of music making.

4.

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer Students will participate in preparation activities and shared-reflections of practice with both Annie Jackson, our consulting music adaptive music teacher and with Dr. Jarzynski and Dr. Clark in the CSD department. Students will support child participation in small music classes for children with communication and language disorders. Students will be provided with guidance and mentorship through out the process, and they learn strategies to support children with language and communication disorders, they will learn about facilitating small groups, they will learn how to incorporate music into language and communication intervention, they will learn about interdisciplinary aspects of the field, and most importantly they will gain perspective and experience of how all of these things apply in authentic interactions for children.
