Service-Learning Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer Hearts in Harmony is an inclusive show choir for young adults in the Chippewa Valley that facilitates social gatherings in the community for young adults with disabilities. Hearts in Harmony is looking for peer mentors to support our participants in social activities in the community such as dinners out, movies, and other community events.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer Hearts in Harmony is an inclusive show choir for young adults in the Chippewa Valley creating inclusive social connections in safe spaces to create joy.

3.

What skills are required for this project? 

Answer We are looking for enthusiastic, patient and empathetic students with experience working with people with disabilities that can support our participants in community outings.

4.

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer Students can enjoy being peer mentors to young adults with disabilities while participating in community outings. Special Education, Education, Communication Disorders, Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy majors will have the opportunity for real world experience with young adults and their caregivers. Most importantly, the students will have fun!

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer HiH facilitates 1-3 outings per month in the community that are planned and organized by our Activity Coordinator. These activities such as dinners out, movies, game nights, community events and others can be during the day on the weekends or in the evenings during the week depending on what the coordinator has planned, and can be 1-3 hr in duration.

Additional information (not required).

Answer Participating students are NOT financially responsible for any costs associated with the activities which will be paid for by Hearts in Harmony, ie. if its a dinner out, the volunteers meal will be covered. Volunteers will not be required to provide any personal care or toileting to participants. Once students sign up, the social coordinator will reach out to schedule volunteers and organize the logistics of the activity. Please join us!
