Service-Learning Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer The students will work with the Administrative Office of Sustainability. This project addresses the need for fresh produce that is easily accessible to students. There are areas within the city of Eau Claire that are classified as food deserts, and there are few locations within close proximity to the university that provide affordable fresh produce. The hydroponic units located in the HUB in the Davies Center grow produce year-round that is given directly to the food pantry for distribution. Our goal is to raise awareness of food insecurity and provide students with fresh produce.

2.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer The mission of the Administrative Office of Sustainability is to increase sustainability across campus and provide students with opportunities to be engaged with those sustainability efforts.

3.

What skills are required for this project?

Answer The skills required for this project are the ability to work with a team and the ability to do dirty work. Good time management and communication are also helpful for this project.

4.

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer Learn the processes of hydroponic farming and how sustainability and food equity are connected. Learn to work with the on-campus food pantry and help students become aware of that resource.

5.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer Time availability for this project will vary and will depend on each student’s schedule.
