Service-Learning Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer Community Haven House is a safe and welcoming place for Eau Claire's unhoused population to find relief from harsh outdoor conditions at times when other facilities aren't available. A small staff oversees operations and coordinates with volunteers and donors to provide services for our neighbors most in need. In addition to offering a respite from the weather, Community Haven House provides access to food-share services, workforce resources, training and harm reduction tools, and some hygienic upkeep.

2.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer Our goal is to provide a safe and inclusive environment to Eau Claire's unhoused population. We do so without discrimination and with radical hospitality.

3.

What skills are required for this project?

Answer Volunteers should be comfortable interacting with individuals of all backgrounds. So much of our organization depends on interaction and connection. Some of the other tasks include: Sorting food/clothes/donated goods; cleaning areas of the facility; and assisting staff with supervisor the check-in area.

4.

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer Students should leave with a newfound understanding of their community and the ability to think more critically about the diverse experiences of others. They will encounter a variety of people with a series of unique challenges, and they should be able to treat each individual case with dignity and respect. This knowledge can be applied far more extensively, as there are people experiencing homelessness in all sorts of different places. What they learn at Haven House can be used to develop a greater comprehension of those experiences.

5.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer Our volunteer shifts are as follows: Tuesday - Friday: 8:00 - 10:00 AM Sunday: 8:00 AM - 10:00 AM 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

6.

Additional information (not required).

Answer Our hours will be adjusting at the beginning of November. We will be open 7 days per week instead of 5. The weekday will remain largely the same, but weekend times may change.
