Service-Learning Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer Volunteers help set up, run, and clean up after public and private planetarium shows and other astronomy outreach activities sponsored by the L.E. Phillips Planetarium. This aids in communication of science to the public as well as to visiting groups like field trips and scouting troops.

2.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer The L.E. Phillips Planetarium promotes interest and education about astronomy to the public through public and private presentations inside and outside of our planetarium.

3.

What skills are required for this project?

Answer Public speaking, knowledge of astronomy, general adeptness with technology.

4.

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer Students will help with the running of the planetarium. In the process, they will become better communicators of science and gain an understanding of the broad spectrum of knowledge about science present in the public.

5.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer Students must be available most Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 while classes are in session to assist with public planetarium shows. There will be other private shows that students may or may not be available for during the day, though they would have to go through training before interacting with youth per University protocols.

6.

Additional information (not required).

Answer This position is intended to be perpetually available, but realistically, only one or two volunteers are needed at any given time.
