Service-Learning Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer By staffing the museum campus main desk, volunteers are expected to share accurate, factual information regarding both museum operations and the basic history of our region. During museum operating hours, Visitor Services Volunteers work under staff supervision to provide visitor services, which may include any of the following: Answer and direct phone calls, handle admissions and store transactions, keep areas tidy and welcoming to maximize visitor experiences. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, additional Visitor Services Volunteers provide visitor access to and information about outer buildings on the museum grounds.

Answer Chippewa Valley Museums connects people to our community and inspires curiosity by collecting, preserving, and sharing our region's historical and cultural resources.

What skills are required for this project? 

Answer -Speaking clearly on the phone and in person -Basic computer/tablet/internet skills -Basic cash handling -Attention to detail -Reliability -Timeliness

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer Service Learning Objectives for Visitor Services Volunteers: -Students will gain a basic understanding of Chippewa Valley Museum's mission and available resources -Students will learn three new ideas or facts regarding Chippewa Valley's history and culture -With prior approval and arrangement with a staff supervisor, students will have the opportunity to connect their major coursework to a 10-hr "mini-project" meeting a museum need during the course of their Visitor Services Volunteer experience -Students will engage and connect with visitors, staff, and other volunteers comprising diverse backgrounds

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer Orientation and training is a 2hr commitment with flexible scheduling. Visitor Services Volunteers must be available during museum operating hours and must commit to a minimum of two hours per shift. Standard museum operating hours: Tues 5-8p, Wed- Fri 12-5p, Sat 10a-5p. The museum expands its operating days and hours between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
