Service-Learning Proposal Description

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer MDA Summer Camp is a place of complete inclusion, empowerment, exploration, and growth. The magic is in the experience of trying something new, developing friendships that last a lifetime, learning to self-advocate, and harnessing potential. Each summer, kids and young adults with neuromuscular disease attend these life-changing, overnight camps around the U.S. - at no cost to their families..

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) is the #1 voluntary health organization in the United States for people living with muscular dystrophy, ALS, and related neuromuscular diseases. For over 70 years, MDA has led the way in accelerating research, advancing care, and advocating for the support of our families. MDA's mission is to empower the people we serve to live longer, more independent lives.

What skills are required for this project? 

Answer If you’re 17 or older and available for a multi-day, residential camp, we'd love for you to apply to join us as a volunteer counselor! Volunteer Counselors are by Campers’ sides day and night so that they can do all the fun activities that summer camp offers. In addition to bringing joy to campers, this fantastic opportunity allows each volunteer to gain high-quality, field-based experience in physical therapy, occupational therapy, medical professions, education, recreation, and family social sciences, as well as earning volunteer hours.

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer Volunteer counselors are responsible for their camper’s care and well-being 24 hours a day throughout the seven-day Program. As a volunteer counselor you will -Create a fun, safe and inclusive environment for campers. -Act as a companion and encourager of campers, promoting strong self-esteem. -Assist campers, as needed, with camp activities and activities of daily living. Work with unit leaders, program directors or other staff to meet the needs of the campers. -Assure campers are properly supervised at all times. -Have fun and participate in daily activities with enthusiasm. -Set a good example to campers and others by upholding all camp rules. -Set a high standard of cooperation.

5.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer Must completed application and pre-camp paperwork including a criminal background check and interview. Must be available for the entire week of camp, including overnights. Dates are June 8th - 14th, 2024
