Service-Learning Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer In 2024 three major elections will be held. Poll workers are needed to assist voters in the election process. Workers are needed to assist in the early drive-through voting period and on the election day. Poll workers are necessary to guarantee that voters can cast their ballots and have them counted.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer It is the goal of the City of Eau Claire that all eligible voters will be able to cast their votes in a free and fair election. Democracy is dependent on the ability of citizens to participate in the election process.

3.

What skills are required for this project? 

Answer Students should be able to complete training, follow directions, communicate clearly in assisting voters, and work with a wide variety of individuals. In addition, My Vote WI describes the requirements and roles of a poll worker: "To be a poll worker, a person must: Be a qualified elector of the county in which the municipality is located (i.e., an adult citizen of the United States who has resided in the election district for 28 consecutive days and is not otherwise disqualified to vote) Be able to read and write fluently in the English language NOT be a candidate for any office to be voted on at the polling place at that election. Poll workers do everything from check-in voters, help people register to vote, check photo IDs and process absentee ballots."

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer Students will gain an understanding of the election process by learning the requirements through training and first hand by assisting the process.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer Students must be available to complete training prior to any election. The election dates for 2024 are as follows: April 2nd (early voting begins on March 19); August 13 (early voting begins on July 30th); November 5th (early voting begins on October 20th. Students can specify dates and times they are available for the election they are choosing.
