Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer This project is an exciting volunteering initiative centered around operating an ice cream parlor located in The Chippewa Valley Museums. The project aims to merge the enjoyment of delicious treats with the exploration of local history, creating a unique and enriching experience for both volunteers and museum visitors. Volunteers participating in the project will be trained to serve ice cream while sharing fascinating stories about the historical significance of the museum and its artifacts. They will learn about the origins of the ice cream parlor, its evolution through time, and its cultural impact, weaving these narratives into conversations with visitors. The community needs that will be addressed are as follows: · Education and Engagement: By volunteering at the ice cream parlor, students will have the opportunity to learn about the museum’s history in a fun and interactive way. The combination of tasty treats and historical anecdotes will engage visitors of all ages, fostering a deeper appreciation for the past. · Community Building: Volunteering at the ice cream parlor provides a platform for students and community members to come together and connect over shared interests in history and culinary delights. It fosters a sense of belonging and camaraderie among volunteers and visitors alike, strengthening community ties.

Answer Chippewa Valley Museums connect people to our community and inspire curiosity by collecting, preserving, and sharing our region's historical and cultural resources.

What skills are required for this project? 

Answer a. Communication: Effective communication skills are crucial for conveying historical information and stories related to the museum artifacts and exhibits. Volunteers should be able to communicate clearly and engagingly to capture the interest of visitors and enhance their understanding of local history. b. Food handling and safety knowledge: Volunteers working in the ice cream parlor should have knowledge of food handling and safety protocols to ensure that ice cream is served hygienically and in compliance with health regulations. Training in proper food storage, preparation, and sanitation practices is necessary to maintain a safe environment for both volunteers and visitors. c. Basic computer/tablet/internet skills: Technology plays a significant role in various aspects of museum operations. Volunteers at the ice cream parlor will need to utilize computers or tablets for several purposes. d. Basic cash handling: In the operation of the ice cream parlor, volunteers will frequently handle cash transactions from visitors purchasing ice cream or other items. Therefore, proficiency in basic cash handling is crucial to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and security in managing payments and providing change. e. Attention to detail: Volunteers must pay close attention to various aspects of their duties to ensure smooth operations and customer satisfaction. Attention to detail is essential for accurately taking and fulfilling orders, preparing ice cream treats according to customer preferences, and ensuring that the correct items are served. f. Reliability: Encompasses a commitment to showing up for scheduled shifts punctually and consistently. Volunteers must honor their commitments to the project, recognizing the importance of their roles in delivering a positive experience for museum visitors. g. Timeliness: Being punctual allows volunteers to maximize their time at the ice cream parlor, making the most of each shift to engage with visitors and support the museum's mission and objectives. h. Teamwork: Collaboration and teamwork skills are important for coordinating tasks with other volunteers and museum staff members. Volunteers may need to work together to manage crowds, handle customer inquiries, and maintain the cleanliness of the ice cream parlor and surrounding areas.

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer a. Students will gain a basic understanding of Chippewa Valley Museum's mission and available resources. b. Students will learn new ideas or facts regarding Chippewa Valley's history and culture, specifically regarding the ice cream parlor. c. Students will engage and connect with visitors, staff, and other volunteers comprising diverse backgrounds. d. Students will promote community engagement by actively engaging with parlor visitors, encouraging them to explore other areas of the museum and participate in additional programs or events.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer Orientation and training are a 2-hour commitment. Ice Cream Parlor Volunteers must be available during parlor operating hours and must commit to a minimum of two hours per shift. Standard parlor operating hours are Fridays and Saturdays 1:00-5:00pm starting May 25th.
