Service-Learning Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer The project aims to collaborate with the Director of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion and the English Learners Coordinator at Eau Claire Area School District (ECASD) to create comprehensive welcome packets and digital resources for educators and staff receiving newcomer English Learner (EL) students from diverse cultural backgrounds into their schools in the Fall. These informational materials will serve as accessible and engaging resources to support teachers in creating inclusive learning environments for all students.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer Our mission is to inspire and prepare our students to live creative, fulfilling, and responsible lives.

What skills are required for this project? 

Answer 1. Basic experience in research to help collect cultural information about the countries of origin and the people who live there. 2. Cultural competency to ensure the content of the welcome packets respects and reflects the diversity of the student population. 3. Basic or intermediate level of graphic design skills to create visually appealing and engaging materials, based on the information gathered. 4. Attention to details to ensure accuracy and quality in the content and design of the welcome packets. 5. Communication skills to effectively collaborate and gather feedback from project partners.

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer 1. Gain practical experience in collecting information and gathering cultural details to support diverse student populations. 2. Cultivate collaboration and communication skills through working closely with stakeholders to meet their needs and preferences. 3. Deepen understanding of equity, diversity, and inclusion principles in education and community advocacy contexts. By engaging in this project, university students aspiring to become teachers, graphic designers, or community advocates will have the opportunity to apply their skills and knowledge in a meaningful way, contributing to the creation of more inclusive and welcoming learning environments for newcomer English Language (EL) students.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer Flexible Schedule, M-Th, 9:00am-4:00pm

Answer Students must complete the ECASD Volunteer form and complete a background check prior to starting their Service Learning project. If selected, students should also bring a picture ID when checking in to the building. This project placement will be located at the District Administration Office, 500 Main Street, Eau Claire, WI 54701.
