Service-Learning Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer Trinity Equestrian Center provides mental health services to people through Adaptive Riding and Equine Assisted Psychotherapy. It is important that the horses in the Trinity herd receive top-notch care in order to be able to manage their client workload and provide services. Horse care and barn chores at Trinity includes the following: - feeding hay/grain to horses - leading horses out to pasture - cleaning stalls - sweeping - other general facility clean up

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer Trinity changes lives through connection; transforming struggles into strengths for youth and survivors of trauma.

3.

What skills are required for this project? 

Answer Volunteers must be able to walk for 60 minutes straight and lift up to 50lbs. Volunteers must be able to follow directions, work independently, be flexible with changes of plans, be patient, kind, and caring with all who they work with. Volunteers must attend a volunteer orientation/training prior to participating in sessions.

4.

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer Increased knowledge of animal care and husbandry. Increased knowledge of equine assisted activities that support people with mental health diagnoses.

5.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer Current need for barn chores is on Wednesday and Thursday mornings. There may be some need for Wednesday and Thursday afternoon. Morning barn chores start at 7:30am and take 2.5-3 hours. Afternoon barn chores start at 4:30pm and take about 1 hour.

Answer Previous horse experience is not required, training will be provided. Closed toed shoes required. Wear clothes okay with getting dirty.
