Service-Learning Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer In collaboration with Mayo MERG, American Indian Studies is a partner in bringing a community powwow to the area. As part of our partnership, we are providing volunteer opportunities for students throughout the powwow. The powwow brings not only various community partners together but also Tribal Nations to the area. The theme of the powwow this year is healing together.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer The American Indian Studies Program at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire is committed to the study of the cultures, values, history, and contemporary life of the indigenous nations and peoples of North America. Through courses from various disciplines and interactions with American Indian professionals, elders, and peers, students will develop abilities and enhance their knowledge and understanding in accordance with university and tribally defined standards of excellence.

What skills are required for this project? 

Answer Availability during the hours of the event as well as prior and post for setup and cleanup as well as availability for an informational/preparation meeting prior to the event.

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer Develop awareness and/or deepen understanding of Indigenous communities as well as our local/regional community partners as they relate to health and education Participate in supporting the sponsors and participants of the powwow, including elders

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer Availability during the hours of the event as well as prior and post for setup and cleanup as well as availability for an informational/preparation meeting prior to the event.
