Service-Learning Proposal Description

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer I am looking for a student to help create a hiking trail map/signage for the Guettinger Woods recreational area. There are several hiking/snowshoeing trails developed on the property, but we do not have any official maps for the area. I would like to have a map/signage created for the trail heads and to be placed at key intersections. Signage will be useful in helping individuals using the trails to know where they are going, how long the trail is, and how to get back.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer To enrich the quality of life for current and future generations by providing a parks & forest system that will promote recreational opportunities, wildlife, and watershed protection while sustainably managing the county forest for optimum production of forest products.

What skills are required for this project?

Answer GPS/GIS skills, map making, budget management

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer The student will learn how to successfully complete a public works project, while working on a strict budget. The map project will need to be consistent with other Eau Claire county parks and forest maps and publications. The student will be able to create a permanent fixture in our park system for years to come with this signage.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer The student must have reliable transportation to get to the parks and forest office and also to the project site. From there, all of the work can be done at campus on the computer.
