Service-Learning Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer Students will be sitting at a table where customers will purchase $1 tokens using SNAP/credit/debit cards. They will be swiping cards, keeping written records, dispensing tokens and other tasks related to the Token/Market Match Program (counting and bagging of tokens, etc.) with the Downtown Farmers Market. This program is to offer people with SNAP (FoodShare) to be able to purchase locally grown, healthy food at the Eau Claire Downtown Farmers Market.

2.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer The Downtown Farmers Market is an organization that brings local farmers and producers together with the consumers in our community. This gives the community an opportunity to interact and ask questions with the people that grow, raise or produce their food. This also gives the farmers another outlet to sell their product.

3.

What skills are required for this project?

Answer It's important that the volunteer can interact with the public. There is a POS machine that SNAP/credit/debit cards get swiped and record keeping is done. No experience is necessary for that as it is easily learned.

4.

What are the objectives for the student learning and service?

Answer As an organization that deals with food it is important that we give back to our community. What better than to offer a way for people with food insecurities to be able to swipe their SNAP cards and double their food dollars while eating healthy food? This makes all of us aware of the need for a program like this in our community for families, young people to senior citizens.

5.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer Wednesdays 8:30 - 12:15 and possibly some Saturdays 8:15 - 12:45.

6.

Additional information (not required).

Answer Under our current circumstances (COVID-19) we are going to have masks available, keep the Token Table separated from the main part of the Market and have safety precautions in place.
