Service-Learning Proposal Description


Briefly describe the project and the community to be addressed.
Answer What is Circles of Change groups? Circles of Change groups are dialogue groups consisting of students, faculty, staff, civic leaders, and community leaders who wish to tackle an issue confronting their community and bring about positive changes that will benefit all parties. Each group reviews possible solutions or courses of action and together creates action plans for implementation. What happens in the Circles of Change group discussion? Each Circles of Change group works through a workbook guide with the following key topics: Session 1: Making connections Session 2: Our Ethnic Backgrounds and Racism Session 3: Our Unique Nation Session 4: Why Do Inequalities Exist? Session 5: Looking at Our Community Session 6: Moving to Action There is no pointing of fingers, blaming of others during the sessions. It is a safe place to have a productive discussion. What time and how long are the sessions? In the fall 2017, the session will begin October 2 – November 11. Each group will meet once a week for 2 hours. You must commit to the full six weeks. After the 6 weeks is over, your obligation ends unless you want to continue with the action team. Action team schedules are self-determined. Who is in each group? The groups will consist of 10-12 participants who are civic leaders, business owners, community members, faculty, staff, and students. We want to have at least 4-5 students in each group. We need your student voice. This is an opportunity to work with others to implement plans that will have a positive impact on our campus and community.


What is the mission of the agency or organization?
Answer The mission is to build community between the university and the Chippewa Valley. The goal is to bring together everyone in the community to build relationships with other different from us.


What skills are required for this project?
Answer The skills required for this project: communication, listening, critical thinking, and reviewing community data.


What are the objectives for the student learning and service?
Answer The objectives for the students is to: 1. Learn more about equity, diversity and inclusion 2. Work with university and community members to identify issues 3. Learn to develop action plans that have a positive impact on our campus and community 4. Opportunity to implement the action plans Build communication skills 5. Build communication and listening skills 6. Reflection and Self discovery


What are the availability requirements for the student?
Answer The student must commit to meet with a team of university and community members, including other students in a discussion one day a week for 2 hours for 6 weeks. This will include one or two homework assignments and a reflection paper. The student must attend all sessions.
